Good Scents Come Naturally

I'm really excited to be introducing you all to my new favorite brand of perfume, SKYLAR. Skylar Perfume is only a small brand, consisting of 6 signature scents. But the thing that makes this small brand stand out from the rest is the fact they are Clean, Natural, Hypoallergenic and Cruelty-Free! Before I go into detail about the scents, lets briefly delve into why using a Natural perfume should take priority in our daily beauty routine.

If you ever find yourself walking into a perfume shop and instantly developing a cough or a headache, you're not alone! This does not mean you're simply 'sensitive' to particular perfumes. Though it may seem that a cough or a headache is a relatively mild symptom, perfumes and fragrances can actually damage your health long-term, and here's why...

Take a look at your current perfume, now read through the ingredients label and see if the word "fragrance" appears. Due to perfume companies wanting to keep their 'trade secret', legally they are not required to list all the chemicals used to produce that fragrance. So the ingredient "fragrance" can include up to as many as 3000 chemicals! Vegan and Natural Food is one of the biggest trends at the moment, we are so careful about the ingredients we put into our body, so why aren't we more careful about the ingredients we put on to our body?

Considering Perfume is something we spray directly on to our skin on a daily basis, wouldn't it be nice to know what those undisclosed chemicals listed under "fragrance" actually do to us?

There's a very long list of ways perfume can damage your health, whether it's long term or short term, they are all serious. Whilst doing a bit of research on the health effects of perfume, one point really stood out to me. Like me, I'm sure this is your first time finding out that perfumes contain 'hormone-disrupting chemicals'. An example of which is 'phthalates' (something likely included in that list of undisclosed chemicals on the perfume bottle).

This chemical interferes with our body's natural hormones, leading to illnesses such as depression and anxiety.

Parabens are also included in that list of undisclosed chemicals, it is used as an inexpensive way of increasing the shelf life of many products we use on the daily, yet this too has been recognized as a 'hormone-disrupting chemical'. A few other chemicals often found in perfumes include Sulphates, Ethanol, and Styrene. All of which have been connected to poor health and are even connected to cancer-related illnesses.

Without even mentioning the astonishing effect perfume has on our environment, you can already see how damaging chemicals in our perfume can be. With that long list of ingredients to avoid, it's next to impossible to find a perfume that's actually safe. Credit where credit's due, there are a handful of companies that have put effort into making a perfume that is 'safe', but they simply don't smell as good as the chemical packed ones! Hopefully all that information hasn't put you off perfume altogether, because now is the point I'd like to introduce Skylar.

Skylar is one of the few companies to offer a safe alternative to perfume. Not only do they offer something that won't damage your health, but they have managed to keep that amazing quality and long lasting smell that we all look for in a perfume. Skylar Perfume is free from all the chemicals mentioned in bold above, Skylar uses Sugar Cane Alcohol as their perfume base and adds there own blend of natural fragrances and essential oils. Although Skylar does provide in-depth descriptions of their perfume scents, it can still be hard to decide which scent will work best for you just by reading a description. So there are two ways around this problem, the first being Skylar's Online Quiz. Just answer a handful of questions to find your new signature scent.

The second way you can find the best scent for you is by ordering the Sample Palette. As seen in the photo above, the sample palette contains small samples of the companies signature scents in a very unique display case! This watercolour design is carried across all Skylar Products (definitely Instagram worthy), I've also very recently discovered that the perfume's case is designed to double up as a makeup brush holder! Please tell me I'm not the only one who constantly misplaces my makeup brushes?? It seems criminal to throw away such pretty packaging, so I'm glad there's a way I can keep hold of it!

I decided to go about both ways of finding my signature scent, Skylar's online quiz came to the result that the 'Isle' perfume would be most fitting for me. But not wanting to miss out on the other scents, a sample palette had to be included in my order!

This information now is just my personal opinion, but I'm really glad I got the sample palette. When reading the descriptions online, the 'Arrow' scent most appealed to me. But after comparing all the scents, I actually found it to be my least favourite. This scent is described to be "spicy and seductive" however I felt it to be a little rich. So if you are after something a bit more refreshing and subtle I'd recommend the 'Isle' fragrance. Personally, I'm all for floral fragrances, the 'Meadow' fragrance is my favourite so far. The floral scent really comes through, its sweet without being sickly and isn't overpowering. Just one or two sprays is sufficient of all the scents, so the sample palette really lasts a good while! I'd say each sample bottle holds around 20-30 sprays each.

Something I haven't got round to trying is mixing the scents. When the sample palette arrived I was both surprised and pleased to read that you are able to mix and match the scents! Suddenly those four scents become an endless amount of possibilities. So if my evening plans call for a different scent to that of my morning plans, I can simply add another fragrance on top and rock something completely new rather than both fragrances overpowering each other. I look forward to experimenting with the scents and possibly finding one that tops my current favourite!

At first glance, the prices seem fairly average. But consider how much work has gone into making the perfume safe for all, you can't really put a price on good health! The new sample palette really is a steal at only 20 dollars, this now includes all 6 scents that the company sells.

All the descriptions on the website are very apt, but one thing I feel runs throughout all the products is that they are refreshingly light. I don't like walking into a room and being overwhelmed by somebody's perfume, so having something subtle is a nice change. However don't fear that people won't notice your new perfume due to its subtlety, I've received many compliments about my Skylar perfume, particularly the 'Meadow' fragrance. Another thing I love about the perfume is simply the feeling of wearing something safe, I spray the perfume in the morning and happily take a deep breath in order to smell the scent. I don't feel I have to hold my breath whilst spraying in order to prevent any chemicals from catching the back of my throat and causing me to cough. I don't have to think about the harm it's doing to my skin, because it isn't doing any!

There's one other little detail I almost forgot to add! Not only is Skylar's perfume environmentally friendly, but its packaging is too! They really have taken care to think of everything.

In review, Skylar is a company I can see myself making many purchases from in the future. Its perfumes are natural and clean, refreshingly light and they stay with you all day. I'd really urge you to do a bit of research yourself on the harm standard perfumes can do, and then head on over to Skylar and buy something safe! Now for something even more exciting!
