Exploring The Fairy Pools of Skye

The Isle Of Skye is so stunning, I would quite happily live my life there ... if it wasn't for the weather. Unfortunately every place has it's downfall and Skye's downfall is definitely the poor weather. For this reason we had to change our plans ever so slightly, it was a particularly windy day so we decided a cliff-top walk might not be the best of ideas! Instead we headed down to the Fairy Pools (Scotland clearly has a thing about incorporating fairies into it's tourist attractions).

The Fairy Pools are located at the base of the Black Cuillins, so without even starting your hike to the waterfalls you are already surrounded by breathtaking scenery! The mountains here are much more dramatic and intrusive compared the rest of the views we'd seen so far, Skye certainly covers a wide range of scenery! The gloomy weather actually added to the scenery, I'm sure the mountains are still stunning in blue sky and sun, but having the dark rain clouds gave a nice moody grunge feel to our photos.

As you will see by the photos, The Fairy Pools attract people from all over, they are supposedly a great place for some 'wild swimming' but none of us felt brave enough to face that cold water! For the slightly less 'adventurous' the Fairy Pools make for a great hike with views all around, be sure to take your camera (and some waterproofs).

The first waterfall is only 20 minutes from the car and the entire walk is about 45 minutes (that's providing you don't stop at all). But since none of us seem to be able to go anywhere without taking tons of photos, we managed to make the hike last all morning. It's quite a pleasurable walk and is rather easy going, although you will come across a few river crossings! I've never been so appreciative of a pair of wellies!

All that being said, the Fairy Pools' reputation as one of the most magical places on Skye is certainly well-deserved. It's really the turquoise shades in the water that make the Fairy Pools stand out as being different, even with the disrupting impact of the waterfalls, the pools still remain rather still and clear! If you're visiting the area you simply cannot miss the Fairy Pools. Maybe next time we'll be brave enough to take a dip in the water!

If the walking and swimming isn't really your thing, The Old Inn & Waterfront Bunkhouse is just down the road and so is the Talisker Distillery, so why not take shelter from the cold in one of these places!
